Highway safety engineers test new road signs, hoping that increased reflectivity will make them more visible to drivers. Volunteers drive through a test course with several of the new- and old-style signs and rate which kind is more visible.
a. State null and alternative hypotheses to test if the new road signs increase visibility.
b. In this context, what would a Type I error be?
c. In this context, what would a Type II error be?
Answers
A. Null hypothesis is always an equality claim.
And alternative hypothesis is always the one which we are testing.
Thus, Ho : visibility is same for new road signs
Ha : visibility increased due to new road signs.
B. Type 1 error is rejecting null hypothesis when it is actually true.
Thus, Type 1 error : volunteers said that visibility increased by mistake though it remained same.
C Type 2 Error is Not rejecting null hypothesis when it is actually false.
Thus, Type 2 Error: Volunteers reported same visibility by mistake even though there is increased visibility
