CHEM 2001 Exp post lab Staple this to the post lab grade sheet... 5. Calculate the theoretical yield for this reaction using measurements from procedure. 6. If you obtained an actual yield of 0.57g. what is the yield? 7. What IR absorptions do you expect for the starting material (only in the functional group reg 4000cm to 1500cm)? 8. What IR absorptions do you expect for the product (only in the functional group region 4000cm 1500cm-')? to 9. If you performed this lab, what should you get for the products melting point? 10. Complete the following reactions: - KMnO.HO - +KOH + MO + KMnO. + H20 - + KOH + MnO - KMnO + H20 - - + KOH + Meo он • Но
Experiment 8: Preparation of Adiple Acid from Cyclohexene Oxidation reactions will effectively increase the number of carbon anyen bonds in the product Permanganate can be manipulated to gently oxidize an alkene to a diol or cleave a double bond providing a carbonyl derivative. In this reaction you will be performing oxidative cleavage of an alkene to obtain carboxylic acids > KMO. + 4H20 PROCEDURE (Review OP 15, 16): wear gloves To a 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask, add water (10 mL.), cyclohexene (0.5 ml density -0.81 cm-3), and potassium permanganate (1.9 g). Stopper the flask loosely, wrap with a towel and swirl vigorously for 5 minutes. The flask should feel warm. Remove stopper and place Mask on the hot plate for 30 mins., swirling regularly. Hot plate temp. Soc. your yield depends on how well you mix the reactants at this stage) Make a spot test by withdrawing some of the reaction mixture on the tip of a stirring rod and touching it to a filter paper. Permanganate, if present will appear as a purple ring around the dark brown spot of manganese dioxide. If permanganate is still present, add 1 mL of methanol and heat for 5 mins. Repeat this procedure until the permanganate color has disappeared. Filter the mixture through a Hirsch funnel (vacuum) into a clean filter flask. Rinse the reaction flask with 1 mL of hot 0.2 M sodium hydroxide solution and pour through the filter. Repeat with a second portion of 1 mL of 0.2M sodium hydroxide solution. Acidify solution to about pH l by cautiously adding concentrated hydrochloric acid dropwise while stirring the solution. (SAFETY GLASSES!) Once you fill it is close to a pH of 1 add an additional 0.5 mL of concentrated HCI. Place the filtrate and washings in a 50 mL beaker, add a boiling chip and boil over on a hot plate (120°C) to concentrate the solution by half. Take off the heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Place in an ice bath for 5-10 min to complete the crystallization. Filter the product by vacuum (Hirsch funnel) rinsing the flask 3 times with 0.5 mL cold methanol and pouring into the Hirsch funnel. Allow the solid to dry on the funnel for 10 mins. Measure the melting point and yield of product. Calculate the percentage yield. Obtain IR For conclusion/discussion: • Discuss and explain IR (also label the spectrum with important peaks) • Discuss and explain percent yield • Discuss and explain MP range Exp 8-3
