PART 1: IMPEDANCE OF A CAPACITOR PREPARATION In an AC circuit capacitors and inductors have an effective resistance that restricts the flow of current, this is known as impedance. An equivalent to Ohm's law can be written where resistance R is replaced by the impedance Z: V = 12 (9-4) where V and I are either the root mean squares or the peak values of the AC source. Capacitors and inductors both have impedance that depend on frequency. How the frequency affects the impedance of these components depends on their reactance. Capacitive reactance (Xc) varies with frequency f, according to the following: 1 Xc (9-5) 2nfc Another difference for the capacitor is that peak current and peak voltage do not occur at the same. Because of this, impedance due to different types of components do not directly add to each other.
