(set up the reaction - next you will get a description of the mechanism to draw). The lone pair of electrons on the cyanide carbon will react with the partial positive carbonyl on. The pi bond between the carbon and the oxygen will break with the bonding pair of ecoming an additional lone pair of electrons on oxygen forming an alkoxide intermediate that is complexed to the potassium ion. In the next step of the mechanism, an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid is added. A lone pair on the oxygen in the intermediate molecule abstracts a proton from the acid, and this weakens the interaction between the intermediate and the potassium ion. Finally, the negative chloride ion forms a complex with the potassium ion. This yields the product 2-hydroxy-2,4-dimethylpentanenitrile and the byproduct potassium chloride.
