Why is it so important to keep the silica gel saturated with solvent at all times during preparation and development of a column? How would the quality of separation be affected if the column was allowed to run dry? 3.

The silica get is thoroughly saturated with solvent to keep the homogeneity of the solvent if the solvent is allowed to drop below a certain level (generally the top surface of the gel), commonly known as 'run dry', then it will lead to creation of air bubbles and formation of channels which is turn leads to poor separation result
