Quarrative Reasoning in C ivis, Lot 2008 3) Some studies have shown that the person who gives the placebo to the pain can influence its effect. For instance, the doctor or nurse says that it is a very powerful medication that will help them, the placebo effect can be stronger Part A placebo Should the person who gives a placebo to a patient know that Explain your answer Part B in a double-blind study, neither the patients nor those who interact with them know who is receiving a placebo If an experiment is double blind with mar groups created by random assignment, with one group receiving a treatment and the other receiving a placebo, and the treatment group improves significantly more than the control group. can we conclude that the treatment is effective? Depending on the ailment, the placebo effect can be almost as far more) powerful as the drug itself. In the study described at the beginning of this lesson patients were given pils with different information. When patients were given a placebo but toid was Maxalt, the pain reduction was statistically similar to when patients were given Maxalt, but told it was a placebo The most powerful combination was when patients were given Maxall and told it was Maxall 4) Suppose that in an experiment, three groups are given three different dosage levels of a new experimental medication: 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg If each group experienced some improvement in the way that was intended, why had this improvement occurred? a) The medication was effective. b) The experiment was not effective. c) Without a control group, we cannot be sure that the improvement was due to the medication Copyright © 2016. Answers

3. a) Should a person who gives a placebo to a patient know that it is a placebo?

A study which is placebo controlled is most effective when it is double blinded, hence the person who gives placebo should not know about that.

3. b) In a double-blind study, the treatment group improves significantly more than the control group, can we conclude that the treatment is effective?

Yes, we can conclude that the treatment is effective when the treatment group improves significantly, as there is less possibility for biased findings in double blinded placebo controlled study.

4. Answer: c) Without a control group, we cannot be sure that the improvement was due to the medication.

In this scenario, there might be an improvement in patient's condition relevant to each doses of medication, but to conclude the drug as effective there must be a control group.
