A 0.50-μF and a 1.4-μF capacitor (C1 and C2, respectively) are connected in series to a 14-V battery.

1. Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor.

Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.

2. Calculate the charge on each capasitor.

Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.

3. Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor assuming the two capacitors are in parallel.

Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.

4. Calculate the charge on each capasitor assuming the two capacitors are in parallel.

Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.

Answers

1. Let Q- charge on each capacitor(charge is same since they are in series) . So from Q=CV

Q=C1 x V1 ; Q= C2 x V2

0.5 V1= 1.4 V2; V1= 2.8 V2----(A);

Also, V=V1+ V2; 14=V1+ V2-----(B)

Solving (A) and (B)

V1=10.3V , V2=3.7V ; 10.3, 3.7

2.Q=C1V1;

Q= 5.2 x 10-6 C (for both)

3. Since both of them are parallel, voltage across =14 V (for both of them); 14V,14V

4. From Q=CV

Q1= C1x V1=7.0 x 10-6 C

Q2= C2 x V2= 1.96 x 10-5 C= 2 x 10-5 C

7.0 x 10-6 C, 2 x 10-5 C
