Read this section about the ovary, and then label Figure 12-5. The ovary is the structure that produces the female re- productive cell, the ovum (pl. ova). The exterior of the ovary is covered by a simple cuboidal epithelium. Deep to this epi- thelial covering is a layer of connective tissue called the tunica albuginea. The ovary is divided into an outer cortex and an inner medulla. The ova, or eggs, are formed in the cortex. The medulla contains blood vessels and supporting tissue. In addition to the ovarian ligament, the ovary is attached to the pelvic wall by the suspensory ligament. The ovarian artery and vein, lymphatic vessels, and nerves are held within the suspensory ligament.
