The way the human body is mapped out on the brain is very interesting. Most would have expected the body to be organized the same from head to toe and proportional for all areas but that is not the case. Why do you think that certain parts of the body are more represented than others?

Answers

Each part of our body performs some motor or sensory function. However, the complexity and sensitivity of these functions are not equal. Our fingers, for example, are capable of executive extremely fine and specific movements, while our trunks can perform very limited movements. For this reason, parts which involve complex functions have a greater representation in the cortex in comparison to others. The amount of cortical area devoted to our fingers is much higher than that devoted to our trunks, even though our trunks occupy a much larger surface area. Therefore, it is directly related to how richly the region is innervated or the amount of sensory and motor neurons a body region has.
