Water is a polar molecule due to the difference in electronegativity values of the H and O atoms. This polarity allows hydrogen bonds to form between water molecules. One consequence of which is water is a liquid with all the subsequent implications of this for life on the planet. Without hydrogen bonding water would be a gas.
