What would be the pH of the solution described in Question $41 ?$

To calculate the pH of this buffer solution. We simply need to know what the PK is and that was given to us at 4.75 And then we need to identify the concentration of the base, which in this case is ch three C to minus. Everyone in this video, we're going to be talking about ph um and what it is and what are some of the different types of ways in which we can measure ph well, first start off ph by definition, um I kind of wrote a simplistic definition down, but essentially it is the measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution. So that's exactly what we're measuring here. Um and if we're talking about P. H. Um there is a scale that we go from, it goes typically goes from 0 to 14, but here there's a scale from 1 to 14. Just but do keep in mind that you can't have a ph uh ranging in the zero's. Um So something that is acidic goes from the range from about one through six. Um something that's neutral, it's about seven. And then anything that's more basic than that will be have a ph about eight through 14. And so when we're talking about in terms of acidic neutral base, a solution that is acidic means that has much more or has a higher concentration of hydrogen ions in that particular solution. Something that's neutral. It has like um it just has a conservative it has one times 10 to the negative seven moller of hydrogen ions. That's by definition what a neutral solution would be in terms of ph and then for a basic solution, um it just means that there are there's like less hydrogen ions present in comparison to something that is relatively acidic. Um so that's the breakdown of ph cl here. There's like just to figure here that kind of shows um different solutions and where they would line the ph scale. So here we have, for example, gastric acid is very acidic. There's a lot more hydrogen ions present in gastric acid as compared to something like bleach for example. Um There's more basic things such as, oh H. For example, there's other things that kind of overpower that instead of hydrogen ions. Um And so that kind of takes into a question, well, how can we measure ph how do we know? And how do we even, how did we even come up with this ph scale? So there are two ways in which we can measure ph one of them is ph paper, you may have used it maybe, and some of your science courses um uh basically what you would do, you get this little strip of paper and you dip it in solution and depending on the color that it turns into um that's going to indicate the ph so let's say you have a litmus paper um It's more of a like a neutral colour, more of a beige color. And let's say you dip it in the solution of lemon juice. For example, the litmus paper may turn red uh and indicating that you have lemon juice. You have, you have a ph of about two. So that's a more uh it's a more visual way in which you can measure ph um And but another way and it's actually more, it's a better way. It's more accurate um is using a ph meter. And the way in which a ph meter works is that it measures the voltage difference between a reference solution um and the probe and then the solution that that it's submerged in, and that's going to give us the ph reading. So here we have an example of what a ph meter would look like. I'm just gonna go ahead and make this a little bit bigger. Um Here is the actual ph meter. Here is the probe and black. Um and then here is a solution. So typically, if you wanted to go ahead and measure the ph of a solution, you go ahead and watch the probe with de ionized water and then you dip it into a a solution that's neutral, has a ph seven. You're basically that's how you were, that's how you're gonna prep the probe and the ph meter. Um and then you're going to go ahead and dip that probe into a solution of your choice. Um and that's going to give you the ph reading. So hopefully this was helpful and determining or understanding the definition of ph and then just a couple of ways in which we can measure the ph.
