My name is Ed Honoratus Learner and today, in my biology course I was
given a topic for my essay and now I will start my adventurous exploration
of this fascinating world of autoimmune diseases. It is called myasthenia
gravis. So, what exactly is this disease?

According to thehttps://www.online-medical-dictionary.org/definitions m/myasthenia-gravis.htmlmyasthenia gravis is a disease in which the
muscles get very tired, specially of the face, eye, tongue, neck and
respiratory muscles as well. So, it makes the movement of the eyelid and
facial expression very difficult. Some patients also reported difficulties in
swallowing as well. Sometimes only the eye muscle is affected. I just
learned from the website above that the name of the disease means muscle
weakness and the word gravis means grave or serious in Latin. It seems
funny enough that the same website states that the disease is not serious
enough as there are several treatments available and patients can have a
close to normal life. I plan to address the treatment options later on.
The diagnostic process involves a physical and neurological examination.
Normally the physical examination is a review of the patient’s medical
history and in the neurological the physician will test muscle strength, sense
of touch, and look for impairment of the eye. Remember that the eye
muscles are also affected by this disease.

A blood test may also be carried out as a method to detect the levels of
acetylcholine receptor antibodies, which should be present at a high level in
the blood stream. I just learned through this essay that acetylcholine is
very important for muscle contraction. I believe I already mentioned this
above.

Individuals with this disorder normally present weakness in many muscles,
not clear or blurred vision. It can also provoke double vision. Shortness of
breath along with change in facial expressions.(1). A very serious crisis can
result when the muscles that control breathing weaken to the point where
individuals might require a ventilator to help them breathe.
With treatment, most patients can significantly improve their muscle
weakness issues and lead normal or close to normal lives. There are several
options of treatment. I am going to briefly talk about two of them.
Immunosuppressive drugs improve muscle strength my suppressing the
production of abnormal antibodies. This demands a constant follow up by a
medical doctor. The other option involves injection of immunoglobulins
which is highly concentrated this temporarily changes the immune response
and alleviates the muscle weakness issues. (1)
I have learned a lot with this project-based investigation. So, in this disease
the immune system sees the receptors of acetylcholine in the muscle fibers
as non-self or as invaders and attack them. This makes it impossible for the
muscle to contract. Try to think about the muscle that assist the breathing
process. If those muscle cannot contract the lung volume will never be
efficient and the person will feel extremely tired up to a point that breathing
machines must be used to alleviate the stress.
Our faces are very important to us. Now try to imagine having no control of
your facial expressions because the muscles do not follow your nerve
impulse. This would make our faces be distorted our eyelid dropped down
keeping our eyes half closed without our control. At any rate, really
interesting stuff.
That is why I find biological science so interesting.

Neuromuscular – according to the www.dictionary.com neuromuscular is a
description to refer to both muscle and a neuron. The space where the
neuron and a muscle fiber jointogether in this case is referred to as a
neuromuscular joint.
Acetylcholine receptors – according to the www.dictionary.com is a
neurotransmitter involved in the process of muscle contraction mechanism.

Myasthenia gravis – these two words were defined above; myasthenia
means muscle weakness and gravis means grave or serious in Latin.
Myasthenia has a Greek origin.
Immunosuppressive drugs – after reading the definition on

became clear that to immunosuppress means to lower to response of the
immune system. So immunosuppressive drugs would be drugs that tend to
lower the response of it. In this particular case the drugs stops the T
lymphocyte from attacking the receptors of acetylcholine in the
neuromuscular joints.

Most of the times while we are working on a research project, we pay little
or close to zero attention to the sources that we are using as reference.
Well, I learned that information is power, so I am always interested to know
whether the sources that I choose to use have great reputation. I learned
this while attending Mr. Walter’s biology classes.

First I'm gonna start reviewing what myasthenia gravis is. So specifically it's a skeletal muscles that are involved in this and what's going to happen is the voluntary muscles. So the ones that we choose to move, the ones that we have control over to move when we want them to move, for example, my arm or to smile, those voluntary muscles are the ones that are affected. Now, you're going to see this mostly in the ice, the muscles that move the eyes around, the muscles that move the mouth around um the throat area and the limb, so legs and arms area now, um something like this that starts, you know little by little and then gradually can get worse. Not too big of a deal at first. However, if it does affect certain areas like our limbs and we're not able to walk or move around. That does take a toll on the quality of life that we have or if I throw up muscles are unable to swallow or things like that, it does take a toll and has a very big effect on the quality of life that we have. So um again, here is an example. This is on the left, the normal nerve compared to when this type of ottoman auto immune disease takes over and begins affecting the messages that are trying to be sent to our muscles that allow us to do. I'm just our daily movement, smiling, swallowing food, lifting our arms up, walking, that sort of thing. Um Next one I want to go over is the type of resources that are best. So anytime we're doing a research, the best type of sources that we could possibly use in our studies are first going to be ones that are published journals. Um so this could be like published articles, original ones or even peer reviewed ones. These are going to be the best type of sources that we can use. And so published. So, think of the very first original experiments that were done. Maybe it was on medication and treatment for this that they used or ones that were let's say they took original study and somebody else did another experiment to further explore this. Those are the ones that we typically want to use. Now remember we want to keep in mind dates When using sources we don't want to use something from 1990 or we don't want to use something from 1950s. We'd rather use something that's closer to date. That's going to be more relevant more. Uh, let's say explored more recently with a different technology and medicine that we have nowadays. Some other sources that could be beneficial and help you if you're not able to find information through peer reviewed articles is going to be things like dot Gov websites and dot e D U. So dot gov could be ones that have been published through, let's say, the national health database, through the government or dot e D U. Could be different universities that have studied these sort of things I think of. Um, even teaching hospitals, john Hopkins, those sort of things. Those are great resources to use. Ones that you want to stay away from are typically going to be your dot com and even sometimes dot org, depending on what that website is. Those aren't strong resources to have as I think of dot com think of when you go on google and Wikipedia pops up, that's dot com. And even some dot org aren't going to be reliable sources
