Okay, So when we talk about chemical bonds, there are really two main types Ionic Bonds and Co. Vaillant Bonds. Now, both of these are chemical bonds. So they both are attractive forces that that help hold compounds together. But they're really quite different in a lot of ways. Caine s O If we take a look at Ionic bonds, um, one of the ways you can always spot these is that they tend formed between medals. Okay, which tend to be on the left side of the periodic table and non metals. Okay, which tend to be on the right side of the periodic table. So medals are things like with the M magnesium transition metals, which are in the middle of the periodic tables of things like maybe iron. Okay, our non metals around the right side of the periodic table. And these air things like oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, chlorine. Okay, now, if we contrast this with CO Vaillant bonds, Cho vaillant bonds tend to form between two non metals. Okay, so they usually are going to be between elements that are only on the right side of the periodic table. Okay, Another key difference between these types of bonds is based on how the electrons in the bond behaved. Okay, so in Ionic bonds, those air usually characterized by a transfer of electrons from one element to the other. Okay, this is because the Electra negativity of medals and non metals is usually pretty different. Case A non metals are very electron negatively, which means that they like to attract electrons. Medals are usually not very Electra negative. Which means that they like to give up electrons. Eso, usually in the case of a ionic bond, we have an electron going from the metal, okay. And it can be more than one electron, in fact, to the non metal. And what happens when we transfer electrons is we formed charged species called ions. Okay, Um, a positively charged ion is called a cat eye on. OK, one way that you can remember that cat ions are positive is that you have a tea and kat I n and T kind of looks like a plus charge. Okay, um, and you have an ions which are negative. Okay, So an ionic bonding, we generally form a cat eye on on whatever our mettle is okay, because that's what's giving up electrons. And we usually forman an ion on whatever the nonmetal is because that's what's attracting the electrons in the bonding tends to be between ions. Okay, between charge species on DH. Because these charge species were just sort of big balls of charge, there really isn't any directionality to the bonding. Okay, so when ions bond with each other, they just sort of sort of like to, ah, basketballs. And they just sort of touched and it doesn't really matter where they're touching. You can kind of roll the balls around each other, but as long as they're in contact, there's still a bond there. Okay. Co Vaillant bonds are actually quite a bit different because they usually involve a sharing no of the electrons and came Now the reason for this is that because the bond is forming between two non metals, the electro negativity difference really is not that big. Okay, all of the non metals, they're goingto have electra negativity. Is that air pretty close to each other s O Subsequently? What happens is instead of electrons going completely from one species to the other, the electron that just sort of shared equally between the elements, okay. And what this does is it sort of creates these discreet chemical bonds that actually stay, um, in a well defined area. Okay, so ionic bonds tend to be very loose, right? You could just sort of think of two balls of charges. This kind of sticking together. Where is with CO? Vaillant Bonds. There's actually a well defined bond between all of the elements that make up the chemical compound. Okay, So to wrap up Ionic bonds again tend to be between medals and non metals, where his co Vaillant bonds are going to be between just two non medals. All right, um, Ionic bonds. They're going to involve a transfer of electrons from the metal which forms a positively charged cat eye onto the nonmetal, which forms a negatively charged an ion. And those just kind of stick together like, sort of two balls in charge. Now, in co Vaillant Bonds, we don't transfer electrons. We share them equally. Okay. That creates well defined chemical bonds that sort of keep the elements well connected

A polar Covalin bond contains two Adams with differing electro negativity. Ease. Because of this, the one that is more electro negative say B is going to have a partial negative charge while the other one will have a partial positive charge. In the case of a non polar Co. Vaillant bond, the purest non polar Kobe Lind is going to be between two atoms of the same element. They have the same electro negativity, so there is no partial positive. More negative in the bond is neutral or non polar.

Covalin Bond. We typically think of electrons being shared now. They may not necessarily be equally shared, but they're likely, but they're considered to be shared. One Adam. In the case of an Ionic bond, we assume that the electrons are not shared, but they're completely transferred to the more electro negative Adam now, truthfully, all bonds life somewhere between perfect sharing and perfect transferring.
